British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
