EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
