Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
