In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
